January Article
Well it is very hard to believe that winter is here. We have done so much work since mid September. We have built 16 full bridges, fixed 4 partially, And trimmed almost 20 miles of trails, ditched the rail road bed, added culverts, put a stockade fence up for a landowner to help keep people on the right trail, We have also opened up 2 new trails. Signing all the trails has been interesting. So as u hear we have been slightly busy as is everyone this time of year. Club members are out every day of the week. Everyone is trying to put forth some sort of effort, which is great. The club has grown this yr to the point we have actually tripled our membership from last yr.
We have also Gained 3 Business Memberships for the following businesses Blast From The Past, Lakeside Market and York’s Motorsports and Power Equipment. New officers have been elected for this season Donald Ham President, Ten Gonska Vice President, Mary House Treasurer, Lisa Dorrie Secretary/Trail Master, Mike Wescott Sub Trail Master, and Edwin Light MSA Director. We are all looking forward to the upcoming months. We have a lot of activities planned.
We have spaghetti supper is planned for Saturday, Jan 9th @ the Lions club on the corner of Rt. 202 and 35 from 4:30- 630, a bomb fire that will help us dispose of some old wood from the bridges we have replaced and also brush from trail trimming, We have been asked to join a local club for a club ride and have several club rides. We have also added a web site with updates and information. There are also emails for all officers so if you have any questions or comments please feel free to contact them. Our web address is www.hollishonkers.com take a look.
Several local businesses have come on board to help us out with sponsorship. They have been very helpful with donations and advice. We would like a special thank you to Dave Watson for coming to our meeting in November. The Hollis Honkers are working alongside the Hollis Free-Wheelers, and the State of Maine Equestrian to try and improve ITS 89 for all to enjoy. This has been a fun project thus far and will continue in the spring. During a meeting with the three clubs a comment was made Lets make these trails inviting for people to want to use them.
The Hollis Honkers have started that already be
rebuilding bridges, clearing and trimming trails. We have been doing a
lot of landowner’s communication this year and it truly has been
eventful and enriching. They all have great stories about previous
years, and several snow stories of their own. Thank you so much too all
the members for your hard work and dedication without a small amount of
help from everyone things would never get done. We would also like to
thank Denis Robinson and his son Alston for coming out on the trails
every weekend for the last two months of volunteering their time, ATV,
chainsaw, and truck. You may ask why single out Denis and Alston well
there not members of the club and they don't have a snowmobile, but
Denis brings his son out to help so he can learn the joys of the
outdoors and the true feeling of what it’s like to volunteer your time
for a good cause.
